That ended on October 28, 2026. At its “Pro and Tell” event in Los Angeles, Apple announced the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, its first laptop with a touchscreen, wrapped in a tandem OLED panel and a Dynamic Island borrowed from the iPhone.

It arrives with a twist: the touchscreen models use last generation’s M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, while a cheaper non-touch MacBook Pro got the newer M6. Here’s what the new laptop offers, what it costs in India and the US, and which model makes sense.

Quick facts

The MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display is Apple’s first laptop with a touchscreen, available in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes.

In India, prices start at ₹3,49,900, with sales beginning November 9; in the US, it starts at $2,899 and ships November 6.

It runs on the M5 Pro or M5 Max with up to 128GB of unified memory and up to 16TB of storage.

The display peaks at 2,000 nits, and Apple claims up to 24 hours of battery life.

The new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6, at $1,999, has no touchscreen or OLED.

What Apple Announced at “Pro and Tell”

The touchscreen MacBook Pro was the finale of a three-day run. Apple introduced an OLED iPad mini on Monday, October 26, followed by an M6 iMac and a 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro on Tuesday. The touchscreen laptop landed on Wednesday, at an Apple event in Los Angeles that CEO John Ternus attended.

Rumours had pointed to a premium “MacBook Ultra,” but Apple kept the MacBook Pro name. The new models sit above the M6 MacBook Pro in the lineup, alongside the existing mini-LED versions.

PROLED XDR: The Display and the Touch Experience

The star is the PROLED XDR display, which uses tandem OLED, two layers of self-lit pixels stacked together to improve brightness, contrast, and colour accuracy. It measures 14.2 inches or 16.3 inches, reaches up to 2,000 nits of peak HDR and SDR brightness, offers a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and supports a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. There’s an optional nano-texture finish to cut glare.

Touch is the bigger shift. Apple built the touch sensor into the display panel itself rather than layering it on top, which it says reduces latency. You can scroll, pinch to zoom, drag items between apps, and use gestures to manage windows. macOS automatically converts touches into clicks for many existing apps, and updated gesture APIs let developers add touch controls. Apple is also letting developers test touch input for iOS and iPadOS apps on the new machine.

The Dynamic Island also comes to the Mac, acting as a hub for Spotlight, Live Activities, and Siri AI. Apple showed touch in creative apps, including Final Cut Pro for timeline scrubbing, Pixelmator Pro for direct design work, and Logic Pro for playing on-screen instruments.

Specs: M5 Pro, M5 Max, and a Lighter Design

Both sizes use Apple’s M5 Pro or M5 Max chips with Neural Accelerators in each GPU core, plus a third-generation ray-tracing engine. Apple targets the M5 Pro at coding, AI apps, and editing multiple 8K ProRes streams, and the M5 Max at visual effects, 3D animation, and running large language models locally. Memory goes up to 128GB, and storage up to 16TB.

Apple reworked the thermal design to cut weight. The 14-inch model weighs 1.38kg and the 16-inch about 1.82kg, with the 14-inch half a millimetre thinner and the 16-inch nearly a millimetre thinner than before. Other specs include three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC slot, MagSafe 3, a six-speaker system with Dolby Atmos, a 12MP Centre Stage camera, Wi-Fi 7, and Touch ID. The laptops run macOS 27 with Apple Intelligence, and Apple claims up to 24 hours of battery life, with fast charging to 50 per cent in about 30 minutes.

Price in India and the US, and Release Dates

In India, the 14-inch with M5 Pro starts at ₹3,49,900 and the 16-inch with M5 Pro at ₹4,09,900. M5 Max versions start at ₹5,49,900 for the 14-inch and ₹5,89,900 for the 16-inch. They come in Space Black and Silver, and pre-orders are open on Apple’s online store and app, with sales beginning November 9 through Apple Stores and authorised resellers. Eligible American Express, Axis Bank, and ICICI Bank cards get ₹15,000 cashback, and no-cost EMI is available for up to 12 months.

In the US, the 14-inch M5 Pro starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch at $3,399, while M5 Max models start at $4,499 and $4,799. Pre-orders opened October 28, with availability from November 6. CNBC noted the new models are notable price increases from existing ones, following Apple’s Mac price hikes of several hundred dollars in June, and one report found that a maxed-out configuration can top $14,000.

M6 MacBook Pro or Touchscreen Model?

This is the awkward part of the lineup. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 starts at $1,999 in the US with 16GB of memory and 1TB of storage. Apple says it delivers up to 30 per cent faster graphics and up to 25 per cent faster AI workloads than the previous 14-inch model. The touchscreen model costs $900 more at the starting tier, but it runs the older M5 Pro.

So the choice is between a newer chip and a better screen. Buy the M6 model if you want the latest silicon and a lower price. Buy the PROLED XDR model if the OLED display, touch, and lighter body matter more than a generation of chip, or if you need the M5 Max’s memory and storage ceilings. Anyone who edits video or does colour-critical work is the likely audience for the OLED panel.

Why Apple Changed Its Mind on Touch

Apple long resisted putting touch on its laptops, so this is a notable reversal. It comes in a market where Windows laptops have offered touchscreens for years, and where Microsoft’s new Surface Laptop Ultra, which starts at $2,599, pitches itself directly against the MacBook Pro. Apple’s approach appears to be adding touch while keeping macOS familiar, translating touches into clicks for existing apps rather than redesigning the interface.

Who Should Buy It, and Who Should Wait

The touchscreen MacBook Pro suits video editors, designers, and developers who want the best display Apple has made for a laptop and will use touch for timelines and design tools. For general use, the M6 model offers most of the power for far less money. Because the touch features are new, it’s also reasonable to wait for first reviews, which should arrive before the November 6 and 9 release dates.

Conclusion

Apple’s first touchscreen MacBook Pro is a major change in philosophy, backed by a genuinely impressive OLED display, a lighter design, and strong creative-app support. It’s also expensive, and its use of the M5 generation creates an odd choice next to the cheaper M6 model.

For professionals who live in creative tools, it’s a compelling premium option. For everyone else, the M6 MacBook Pro looks like the better value. Either way, Apple has opened a new chapter for the Mac, and reviews in early November will show how well touch works in daily use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the price of the touchscreen MacBook Pro in India?

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and M5 Pro starts at ₹3,49,900, and the 16-inch M5 Pro starts at ₹4,09,900. M5 Max versions start at ₹5,49,900 for the 14-inch and ₹5,89,900 for the 16-inch.

When does the touchscreen MacBook Pro go on sale?

Pre-orders opened on October 28, 2026. It goes on sale in the US on November 6, and in India on November 9 through Apple Stores and authorised resellers.

Does the touchscreen MacBook Pro use the M6 chip?

No. It uses the M5 Pro or M5 Max. The M6 chip appears in the separate 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6, which starts at $1,999 in the US and doesn’t have the OLED touchscreen.

How does touch work on a Mac?

You can scroll, pinch to zoom, move items between apps, and use gestures to manage windows. macOS translates touches into clicks for many existing apps, and developers can use updated gesture APIs to build touch-specific controls.

Is it called the MacBook Ultra?

No. Despite earlier rumours, Apple kept the MacBook Pro name. The official name is MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display.

How long does the battery last?

Apple claims up to 24 hours of battery life, and fast charging can reach 50 per cent in about 30 minutes with a compatible power adapter. Real-world results will need independent testing.

After years of resisting touch on the Mac, Apple unveiled a MacBook Pro with a tandem OLED touchscreen on October 28.
